Omega Speedmaster 1957 145.0052

Fifth Speedmaster of the Week, third one in gold – mmm…

Our weapon of choice for this week is a rare and unusual model – the 1957 Replica in 18k gold. A somewhat weird model – the original on which this model is based, the reference CK-2915, was never made in gold.. But somehow the watch above ticks a few boxes over at the SpeedyWatches.com team.. It is rare, it is wonderful, and the heft of a golden case is something that has to be experienced.. Delightful.

We’ve written a bit about the 1957 Replica before;

The Omega Speedmaster 1957 Replica was Omega’s first attempt at a Speedmaster based on a vintage model. Contrary to today’s First Omega in Space, the 1957 Replica used the same case as the regular Speedmaster Professional, but featured a stainless steel engraved bezel, custom dial (note the applied logo, vintage script and lack of Professional-wording) and so-called Broad Arrow hands – all to resemble the original CK-2915. Being a tribute to the 1957 model, it of course also lacked the text referring to the Moonwalk on the caseback.

Wristshot – Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.012 NATO

Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.012

Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.012

Continuing our recent NATO streak: our friend A. sent us a few sunny pics of his stunning Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.012 on NATO strap. A killer watch with a great strap.

A quote from our [work-in-progress] Handwound Chronicles:

The reference 145.012, introduced in 1966, would prove to be the last Omega Speedmaster to be fitted with the column wheel caliber 321. While this might sound a bit dramatic, it was in fact the continuation of the 105.012 under a new reference number, and as such it used the same case and dial as the old reference.

Horizon…

Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.022

Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.022

A pic from our personal archives: the 1969-1970 Speedmaster 145.022.

These Speedmasters were the first (in regular production) to hint to the moonlanding on the caseback, and the engraving was horizontal instead of circular as found on modern Speedmasters. Cool stuff, especially since these were only made between 1969 and 1971.

Of course the engraved bits should be filled with black lacquer.. But on this example, the lacquer has long worn off, leaving nothing but the engraved text. While filling is rather simple -an enamel based paint or even nail polish will do- , an original, worn & loved, example has its own charm…

As witnessed by the date on the pictures, our NATO love (see our previous post) is not just a fling..

NATO Strap on Speedmaster – Yes or No?

Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.0022 NATO

Omega Speedmaster Professional 145.0022 NATO

The NATO strap is somewhat of a controversial thing. While some people despise them for their thinness and low costs, others swear by the casual and instrumental look it can add to a watch. While somewhat obscure a few years ago, many brands now offer them as a standard option or as an extra – Maurice Lacroix, Tudor and Blancpain for example.

Over at SpeedyWatches, we tend to agree with the latter – we love them. NATO straps are a cheap way to change the look of your watch, they’re easy to change and nowadays they come in numerous flavours – from cheap nylon to simple calf leather or even shell cordovan and alligator or shark leather..
