This week’s Speedy of the Week is the Omega Speedmaster First Omega in Space reference 3126.96.36.199.01.001. The First Omega in Space numbered edition is based on the model that Walt Schirra wore during his Mercury Atlas 8 mission in October ’62, a reference 2998.
The 3188.8.131.52.01.001 has a case that resembles the original 2915 and 2998 models – no crown guards! The result is a case with a width of 39.7mm in stead of the regular 42mm. While a earlier model referring to the Speedmaster heritage, the 1957 Replica, featured a regular style case, this one does not – and it adds a whole lotta vintage charm!
The Alpha hands add to the vintage look – as does the raw calf leather strap in brown. We think it’s wonderful Omega chose to go with a regular pin buckle in favour of a folding clasp – it adds to the overall look and feel. However, it is fitted with a sapphire glass – this is the only thing we’d change on this otherwise perfect throwback Speedy!
