Happy 21st of July!

It’s been exactly 47 years since men first set foot on the moon. That means it’s also exactly 47 years ago that the Omega Speedmaster skyrocketed itself to wristwatch stardom, reaching heights that very few other watches would ever match. Though originally designed for gentleman racers, the Speedmaster would forever be linked to space exploration – as we’ve demonstrated with quite a few post on our blog.

To celebrate the 47th anniversary of the succesful moon landing, I’ve compiled a small gallery of space related Speedmaster pictures below. Do you spot -or even recognize- them all?

OMEGA and VANITY FAIR marked the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing with astronaut Buzz Aldrin at a cocktail event on July 16, 2014. The evening benefitted the MAK Center for Art and Architecture and took place at the renowned Sheats-Goldstein House in Los Angeles, California.

OMEGA also celebrated the launch of the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Apollo 11 45th Anniversary Limited Edition wristwatch. Only 1,969 models of this timepiece will be produced; the number of the limited edition timepieces reflects the significant year that the first humans walked on the moon.

A highlight of the celestial-themed evening was the display of an actual moon rock, on special loan from NASA. Telescopes were positioned throughout the property for stargazing and provided a panoramic view of the Los Angeles skyline.

The overall event echoed a theme of modern innovation and classic design and included a 20’ LED video screen showcasing a video montage of archival VANITY FAIR images and historic images from OMEGA and NASA, including pictures of the moon landing. The interactive visual presentation also highlighted six historical OMEGA Speedmaster timepieces from each of those four decades.

Representing the current decade in the interactive display was the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Apollo 11 45th Anniversary Limited Edition wristwatch. Recalling the colors of the Moon and the Apollo 11 lunar and command modules, the Limited Edition timepiece features a 42 mm completely brushed grey grade 2 titanium case with a touch of gold. The black PVD dial, with its 30-minute and 12-hour recorders and small seconds sub-dial, has been produced using a special laser, which creates the design elements on the watch’s face by removing the material surrounding the name, sub-dial numerals and hour markers.

Furthering the evening’s tribute to innovative design, the event benefitted the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, which is a contemporary, experimental, multi-disciplinary center for art and architecture headquartered in architect Rudolph M. Schindler’s House and Studio in West Hollywood, California. The cocktail event took place at the famed Sheats-Goldstein House designed by American architect John Lautner in the 1960s. The expansive and open space house blurs the lines between the interior and exterior and has been featured in numerous films.

It’s Moon Day! On July 20th, 44 years ago today, the first moon landing took place. One day later, July 21st 2:56 UTC, Neil Armstrong was the first human to set foot on the moon. Aldrin followed 15 minutes later… Of course wearing Omega Speedmaster – well, at least Aldrin did, as witnessed by the pics below.

While we have a little something special saved up for tomorrow, we will kick off Moon Day with a few pictures of the Apollo 11 crew sporting their Speedmasters.

Dr. Aldrin has enjoyed a long association with OMEGA: when he stepped on to the lunar surface on the 20th of July 1969, the OMEGA Speedmaster chronograph strapped around his spacesuit became the first watch to be worn on the Moon.  Neil Armstrong had left his own Speedmaster aboard the Lunar Module to serve as a reliable backup to the craft’s electronic timing system.

At the exclusive event VIP customers and celebrity guests were treated to a Q&A session with Dr. Aldrin and well known journalist and TV personality Sarah Wilson.  Dr. Aldrin spoke of his memories of the 1969 mission which made him and Armstrong such an important part of the history of exploration.

Dr. Aldrin also spoke fondly about his partnership with OMEGA which has lasted over 40 years when he wore the OMEGA Speedmaster watch on the moon.  Since then he has worn a large collection of OMEGA watches including the OMEGA Seamaster Diver that he wears on his deep diving trips, which is a favourite past time of his.

On the evening, Stephen De Lucchi, General Manager of OMEGA Australia announced the exciting news that Dr. Aldrin would be signing five OMEGA Speedmaster Moon watches which will be sold exclusively at the OMEGA Castlereagh Street boutique from Wednesday 6th October, with 20% of sales per watch to be donated to the Starlight Children’s Foundation which aims to brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families throughout Australia.

Anne Johnston, Head of Partnerships at Starlight Children’s Foundation was there to accept the kind donation from OMEGA and spoke of her gratefulness to the brand and to Dr. Aldrin.

Dr. Aldrin has a doctorate in astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is a passionate advocate for space tourism and at the event spoke of his aim for human’s to colonize Mars within the next 30 years.
