New: Omega Speedmaster ’57 Rory McIlroy Special Edition 331.50.42.51.08.001

I loved my 30th birthday #Speedmaster ’57 Rory McIlroy so much that @OMEGA is making more!

Rory McIlroy

Two weeks ago Rory McIlroy shared a picture of a special Speedmaster ’57, which his ‘Omega family’ gifted him for his 30th birthday. As a suave follow-up, today he shared that the watch will in fact be made as a special edition.

The Omega Speedmaster ’57 Rory McIlroy Special Edition 331.50.42.51.08.001 is based on the 2013 reference 331.50.42.51.02.001. The silver dial of the standard model is swapped out in favor a sun-brushed champagne dial with a black minute track, and black stars on the sub dials that refer to the spikes on golf shoes. The watch is powered by Omega’s caliber 9301.

The Omega Speedmaster ’57 Rory McIlroy Special Edition 331.50.42.51.08.001 is presumed to be a limited edition though at this point I am not sure how many will be made. 61 pieces?

Hands-On: Omega Speedmaster Caliber 9300: Moonwatch versus ’57

This article was originally published on August 12th, 2013.

With pictures by our friends over at AceJewelers.com, we thought it time for a small comparison between the two versions of the Speedmasters powered by Caliber 9300 that are available thus far: the Moonwatch 9300 and the ’57 9300.

You might have read in many reviews that the difference in size is quite big: 44.25mm for the Moonwatch versus 41.5 for the ’57. While to us it did appear that the ’57 is smaller at first glance, ‘less bulky’ might actually be a better term. Slimmed down perhaps. Or even trimmed down.

The bigger 3:00 and 9:00 subdials create somewhat of a trompe l’oeil. In full-frontal the ’57 appears more refined, carrying less heft – the lugs appear to be considerably thinner and the lack of crown protectors plays a major role as well. But to cut a long story short – the bezel width is near identical, as is the dial opening. Most of the mm’s we think are shaved off the case-band. That is – said protectors and the famous Omega curve that the Moonwatch 9300 does possess.

The bracelets couldn’t be more different, although both are based on the well-known three-bits-per-link design. The 9300 has the bracelet that we’ve come to know very well in the last two decades – with the subtle polished ridges on the mid links. The ’57 bracelet harks back to early bracelet used in the CK-2915, CK-2998 and other early Speedmasters. It seems rather elegant. It does feature huge polished areas, which we suspect are prone to desk diving marks.

As seen in this 3:00 profile shot, there is little to no difference in height. The ’57 measures in at 16.5mm, similar to that of the Moonwatch 9300.

This shot in particular displays the more refined and slim nature of the new bracelet. It suits a watch that is an homage to watches from days gone by rather well we think.

Again it’s been a while since we’ve written about the Omega Speedmaster 57 9300. This model seems to be flying a bit under the radar.. and we’re not sure that’s fair.

The Omega Speedmaster 57 9300, in this case reference 331.10.42.51.01.001, mixes elements of  iconic models from rich history of the Speedmaster with Omega’s latest technology.

The picture above shows the case, which is inspired by the very first Speedmaster. The stainless steel, engraved bezel and case sans crown guards are all modeled after the CK2915 – of course updated to today’s standards.

The dial too is a nod to Speedmasters of days gone by. While it follows the layout that is dictated by the 9300 movement, the Alpha hands (not to be confused with the Dauphine style) are a throwback to the second generation of Speedmasters, the CK2998-gen. On the subdial at 3:00, we find another homage to the CK2915: the return of the broad arrow hand.

At Baselworld 2013, OMEGA introduced a new timepiece that recalls the iconic design of its legendary predecessor. The Speedmaster ’57 has been designed to experience new adventures of its very own.

Inspired by the design of the first OMEGA Speedmaster from 1957, the Speedmaster ’57 has straight lugs extending from the watch case and the bracelet recalls that of the renowned chronograph. The 41.5 mm case blends 18K red gold with stainless steel, a timeless combination.

The black dial features two sub-dials instead of the three that are normally associated with the Speedmaster. This distinction is made possible by the placement of the 12-hour and 60-minute counters on the same sub-dial at 3 o’clock allowing a comfortable and intuitive chronograph reading. The second sub-dial at the 9 o’clock position keeps track of the passing seconds. The 18K gold bezel is easily recognisable with its familiar tachymeter scale.

Powered by the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 9300 – the first of OMEGA’s exclusive Co-Axial calibres to incorporate a chronograph function – the Speedmaster ’57 combines a vintage look and a revolutionary movement. This incredible technology is visible through the sapphire crystal caseback.

The reliability of the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 9300 is so outstanding that the Speedmaster ’57 is delivered with a full four-year warranty and it is water resistant to 10 bar (100 metres / 330 feet).

Since it was launched some 56 years ago, the OMEGA Speedmaster has defined the classic chronograph. It is rugged and reliable and has a timeless design. And while it has been distinguished by its association with numerous missions in space, including all six lunar landings, it was born more than a decade before the first human beings set foot on the Moon. OMEGA introduces the Speedmaster ’57 OMEGA Co-Axial Chronograph, an innovative new member that salutes its legendary ancestor but which has been designed to experience new adventures of its very own.
