Is this some kind of insiders joke?

Pictured is the Expedition 36/37 crew during winter survival training near Star City, Russia. What’s so funny? Cosmonaut Yurchikhin is wearing his Speedmaster X-33, while Parmitano is wearing his Fortis Official Cosmonautes Chronograph!

Okay, okay – just kidding. The X-33 has long been worn by cosmonauts – quoting OmegaWatches.com:

Russia’s pioneering space station MIR was again used as an orbiting test laboratory in 1998 for OMEGA’s X-33 multifunction chronograph. After successful completion of the tests, MIR also offered a unique opportunity to introduce the watch to the public via a live satellite link-up with the Houston Space Center.

The Speedmaster X-33 has been flight-qualified by both NASA and the Russian space agency and is part of the standard equipment available to all astronauts and cosmonauts. However, the legendary OMEGA Speedmaster Professional also remains the only watch certified for extra-vehicular activity.

Now this is a great shot: the Expedition 36/37 crew boarding the Soyuz-rocket, wearing the Omega Speedmaster Professional on the outside of their suit and the X-33 (Yurchikhin and Nyberg) on their wrist. Note – Parmitano is wearing not one, not two but THREE watches!

The Horological Gentleman has to take great care when packing his most essential accessories: the wrist gear.

What are you taking with you on your holiday? The gentleman who took this picture opted for a beach beater Seiko Monster, a vintage Rolex Submariner 5513 and -to keep it on-topic- a Speedmaster X-33, plus a few NATO straps to change looks..

Dutch Astronaut André Kuipers and his X-33

The Speedmaster was the first watch worn on the moon, but the space heritage continues to this very day.. In this picture you’ll see NASA astronaut Don Pettit (left), Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko (center) and European Space Agency astronaut Andre Kuipers, all ISS Expedition 30 crew members, posing for a portrait in Russia.

Focussed on watches as ever, we of course had to zoom in to see what they’re wearing. No surprise with Kononenko, wearing the Fortis Official Cosmonauts Chronograph. André Kuipers though is wearing his second-gen Speedmaster X-33 – a proven instrument for use in outer space.
