If you like the history and stories that come with famous wristwatches, there can hardly be a better choice than the Speedmaster. Originally developed as a tool for gentleman racers, it quickly gained fame as ‘The Moon Watch’ as it accompanied an huge number of NASA astronauts on various missions. Keeping this in mind, there are two models that stand out in the current collection:
The classic amongst classics: the Speedmaster Professional. Available with either hesalite (plexi-) or sapphire glass, the one and only right choice for the history buff is of course ‘sexy plexi’! This is the one and only Moonwatch, as indicated by the engraving on the caseback. It comes on either a alligator leather strap or the bracelet as pictured. Our choice would be the bracelet. The change to a strap is easily done, and as the Speedmaster is very versatile, it doesn’t need a big-money OEM strap to look good.

Another great choice would be the Speedmaster ‘First Omega in Space’. Introduced at BaselWorld 2012 as a numbered -though not limited- edition, it is a tribute to the model worn by Walt Schirra during his 1962 Sigma 7 mission. As the Speedmaster was introduced in 1957, the model worn by Schirra was a rather early version, lacking the -now- signature twisted lugs, crownguards and Professional-writing on the dial. The First Omega in Space is quite a faithful reproduction, including the old-style Alpha hands. It is only available on leather strap, and we’re very happy Omega resisted the urge to fit it with a luxurious alligator strap and choose to go with a tough calf leather strap.
