Two 1957’s in one picture…

Omega Speedmaster CK-2915 - 3594.50.00

Omega Speedmaster CK-2915 – 3594.50.00

Now this a cool shot – courtesy of our friends at Amsterdam Watch Company: the original CK-2915 versus its modern ‘replica’, the 3594.50.00. Great family resemblence – although a 1957 replica based on the modern First Omega in Space would probably be even better!

That being said, Omega did a great job on the 3594.50.00. The bezel, hands, dial and caseback were all changed – only the mid case, movement and bracelet were the same as the regular 3570.50.00. Rather thorough!

Pay our friends a visit at www.AWCo.nl. Yes, this is the same CK-2915 as featured in our Epic Speedmaster Wristshot post.

As promised in our August 27 2013 post regarding the customized 105.003, a pic of the front of the 105.003 – together with two younger brothers.

Besides the three of them being beautiful watches, it is another testament to the fact that the Speedmaster looks great on nearly every type of strap.. From vintage ‘racing’ to luxurious alligator – they all work.

Thanks G.J.!

Our friend George just forwarded this picture of his Speedmaster Professional 3870.50.31 and his Ducati Monster + matching gear. The true Speedmaster heritage – while our favourite watch is known for its space-heritage, it was originally conceived as a watch for speed-freaks such as our friend George.

Thanks for sharing George!

Our friend G.J. just shared these great pictures of his straight-lug Omega Speedmaster 105.003-65. And behold: the stunning caliber 321 is visible through a custom see-through caseback. Original? Of course not. Cool? Hell yeah! The 321 is such a joy to behold.. Old skool class and craftsmanship.

Even cooler is the fact that the 105.003 is the reference Ed White wore during his space walk, making it the ‘First Omega in Space’ – click for information and pricing on its modern counterpart.

For now – enjoy the stunning pictures by G.J! Front will be revealed in the next few days.

Excerpt from our Handwound Chronicles (mind you, work in progress) ;

The fourth generation of the Omega Speedmaster was launched only a year after the introduction of the new reference-numbering, in 1963. While the same movement, caliber 321, was used, the bezel was enlarged with an additional 1mm, making for a total width of 40mm. The ST 105.003 marked the introduction of the so-called Baton-hands, one of the last big changes in the design of the Speedmaster. The case was still the Straight Lug type. The 105.003 was the first Speedmaster to be used in space, on the wrist of the late Ed White on the legendary Gemini IV mission.

Are you following Omega on Facebook? If not, you probably should..

Today Omega shared a picture of one of the original Speedmaster Professional Alaska Projects on their Facebook page – an instant home run. As Omega’s description is pretty perfect, we’ll quote them on this one – don’t forget to visit OmegaMuseum.ch and said Facebook page!

The OMEGA Speedmaster “Alaska Project” Titanium Prototype: Our Vintage Watch of the Month!

In 1969, when the first lunar landing was imminent, OMEGA engineers set themselves a new, nearly impossible challenge: a watch created especially for outer space use that would improve on the previously flight-certified Speedmaster Professional.

One of the results was the Speedmaster “Alaska Project” prototype. This extraordinary chronograph, with its titanium case and distinctive red anodized aluminum outer case had incredible resistance to a wide range of temperatures and was, arguably, space-proof.

NASA was pleased with the performance of this “Alaska Project” watch but the use of titanium proved too costly at the time and because the original Speedmaster Professional was so well suited for use in space, this standout chronograph prototype was not industrialized.

In the years since, OMEGA created some variations of the robust timepiece, including a Speedmaster Moonwatch “Alaska Project” limited edition, but the first prototype is an important part the brand’s legacy. And that special bit of history is on permanent display at the OMEGA Museum in Biel.
