Work in progress: Speedmaster Modding

Speedmaster modding is something that’s becoming increasingly popular amongst Speedmaster aficionado’s. Creating your own ‘limited edition’ can be a joyful thing, and with the easy access to parts -compared to for example Rolex-, and many certified and knowleagable watchmakers, it is not something that is only for those with good connections in the trade.

We are working on two projects – a Speedmaster Professional with a Racing Japan dial, with its design based on the Mark II Racing, and one with a Mitsukoshi ‘Panda’ dial. Both will be based on the classic 3570.50.00 – the perfect base to start your own custom project.

Of course both will be fitted with the matching hand sets – we’ll try to take a pic of those very soon. Note that the Mitsukoshi dial seems a bit off balanced due to the angle of the pic.. But the end result will follow soon!

After numerous astronaut & cosmonaut wristshots, today it’s time for something more earthly – Reinhold Messner and his Omega Speedmaster Professional at the South Pole, shot during his 1989-1990 Antarctic Crossing. A total of 2.800km completed together with Arved Fuchs.

Be just as cool (.. get it…) as Mr. Messner and get your Omega Speedmaster Professional at an Authorized Dealer!

Speedy of the Week: 2013 #34

Omega Speedmaster Rattrapante 3540.50.00

Omega Speedmaster Rattrapante 3540.50.00

After three weeks of handwound Speedmasters, it’s time for a different flavour… This week’s Speedmaster of the Week is the Omega Speedmaster Automatic Chronometer Rattrapante / Split Seconds.

Introduced in 1999, the Speedmaster 3540.50.00 used a case that was similar in design to that of the X-33, although it was now fitted with a tachymeter bezel and one button less. It was powered by caliber 3600, an automatic rattrapante movement based on the Valjoux 7750 movement. It was available with a blue, silver or carbon-fibre dial – the latter being our weapon of choice today.

This Speedmaster has a very distinct High-tech look, especially with the carbon fibre dial. While quite a departure from the regular Professional, it does look wicked in our opinion.

Two classics, one pic

Quick pic of two classics: the Rolex Submariner 5512 and Omega Speedmaster  Professional reference 145.0022 / 345.0818.

We’ve written quite a few topic about the ‘Italia’ Speedmaster.. one of our favourite Speedmaster Professionals. The eggshell / ivory dial is to die for!

Don’t tell your significant other – the strap in this picture is seal  leather.. Vintage, of couse – they are probably no longer available.

The Rolex pictured is a reference 5512 Submariner. A great classic; while the 5513 was not chronometer-certified, the 5512 had such certification.

Omega Speedmaster ‘Teutonic’ 345.0803

Omega Speedmaster ‘Teutonic’ 345.0803

A few more pics of the so-called Teutonic posted earlier this week.

The smooth style and integrated bracelet are an acquired taste – not for everyone. However, we tend to like it.. It is 100% different compared to a regular Speedmaster, but it shares the same DNA.. The same movement.. and the iconic name! It reminds us of other integrated bracelet watches like the Ingenieur SL, the Nautilus, the Royal Oak.. Very sleek, subtle and nice. But to each his own of course!

The example pictured here is one from our private collection. Well worn, but it hasn’t lost any of its charm. They are not hard to find at the right price – it might be a good investment, especially in excellent/ good condition. In our humble opinion, these eighties style watches will gain attention in the next decade.

As you can probably tell by the pic above, this version of the caliber 861 Speedmaster is quite a bit harder to wind than the regular Speedmaster Professional.. The crown is tucked away nicely in its oversized protectors.

In each Teutonic Speedmaster, the caliber number is engraved in the caseback – quite unusual. You might also note the ‘Seamaster’ medallion..
